Sustainability

In today's world the word sustainability has not only become a popular word, but a word with such a heavy burden that the ongoing survival of our planet hangs on its ever letter.

Diane feels strongly that repairing and altering clothes is an important step towards helping achieve the sustainability of our planet. By repurposing clothes, it extends the lifespan and reduce the need to purchase new items, meaning less waste and fewer resources used in the production of new clothing. "It's a simple but effective way to reduce our carbon footprint. Repairing clothes is also a great way to save money by getting more wear out of your favourite garments".

At Seamless Alterations and Repairs we are acutely aware of the effect 'fast fashion' and mass production of textiles has on our planet,  We encourage our customers to purchase their clothes mindfully. (check out our tips on how you can do this below) That is keeping in mind how you can reduce your carbon footprint - even just a little bit, for the greater good of keeping our planet alive.

Seamless also does what we can to reduce our carbon footprint within the business by using offcuts for patch repairs and reinforcing, using recycled threads where possible, and offering as many repair service as possible eg zip repairs, to help reduce the amount of clothes going into landfill. We also provide recycled paper carry bags to customers, free of charge

Here are some simple tips on how to maintain an environmentally friendly wardrobe:

  • Repair clothes instead of throwing them out.  Even if it's something you didn't pay alot for but love to wear.  Extending the lifespan of that item is ultimately better for the planet and your pocket
  • Shop second hand - vintage stores, op- shops, community markets
  • Gift unwanted clothes from your wardrobe back to charity or second hand stores, sell online or gift to a friend
  • Only buy clothes that you know you will wear or need - and get them altered if needed
  • Shop locally - this helps reduces transport emissions and helps support your local businesses.  You also get the added benefit of being able to try on the garment and don't end up sending it back (or not and just adding it to a pile in the bottom of our wardrobe) and saving money in the long run.  There is a wide variety of clothing shops available in Richmond CBD and the Richmond Mall that cater for all ages
  • Try natural fabrics.  There is a wide range of fabrics available now such as cotton, linen, bamboo, hemp and wool. These fabrics don't contain harmful microplastics that enter our waterways when we wash our clothes
